Alpen Musikanten – Alpski Muzikantje

Alpen Musikanten (German and Slovenian for “Alpine Musicians”) is a Melbourne-based trio specialising in vibrant and authentic Alpine folk music from Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Northern Italy, and Northern Croatia.

Passionate about preserving the true spirit of European Alpine music, Alpen Musikanten performs the music exactly as it is enjoyed throughout Central Europe today. Their energetic performances, rich harmonies, and authentic traditional costumes transport audiences straight to the picturesque alpine regions, creating an atmosphere filled with joy, dancing, and celebration.

Featuring piano accordion, bass, guitar, and vocals, the trio performs in multiple languages including German, Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian. Their repertoire is inspired by the renowned Slovenian Oberkrainer style, a genre that transformed Alpine folk music across Slovenia, Austria, Bavaria, Northern Italy, Northern Croatia, Switzerland, and beyond.

Originally pioneered by the legendary Avsenik brothers in Slovenia during the 1950s, the Oberkrainer sound revolutionised traditional folk music by blending lively accordion melodies with guitar and bass rhythms influenced by Gypsy Jazz and Swing. The result is an unmistakably uplifting and infectious musical style that has inspired thousands of bands across Europe and remains one of the continent’s most beloved folk traditions.
