Biography
Ruby Zoontjens is a vocalist based in Adelaide, who has recently completed her Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, specialising in voice. With a dynamic sound shaped by influences such as Aretha Franklin, Veronica Swift, Jazzmeia Horn and Stevie Wonder, Ruby has quickly made a name for herself in Adelaide’s music scene as a versatile, expressive and compelling performer.
Over the years, Ruby has cultivated a rich and diverse musical identity with her artistic journey not only being shaped through her formal education but also by her hands-on experience as a self-employed musician. Ruby is actively building a career in Adelaide’s live music scene through regular performances across a wide range of genres, showcasing her adaptability and broad artistic vision.
Known for her warm tone, powerful vocal range, versatility, and natural stage presence, Ruby brings emotional depth and authenticity to every performance. Her ability to move effortlessly between styles has made her a standout vocalist with a unique voice that resonates with diverse audiences. Whether fronting a jazz band, performing solo sets, or collaborating in cross-genre projects, she engages listeners with a sound that is both refined, heartfelt and captivating.
Beyond the stage, Ruby serves as a vocalist in the Royal Australian Navy Band, performing at ceremonial and public events around the country. She is also a passionate vocal teacher, dedicated to sharing her technical expertise and love for music with the next generation of aspiring singers.
At the 2025 ‘A Night of Jazz’ Ruby received the Helpmann Academy Award for Voice in recognition of her exceptional skills, musicality and promise as a rising artist, where she was also fortunate to perform alongside internationally renowned jazz bassist Linda May Han Oh. Ruby has also worked with esteemed artists such as James Muller, Jazzmeia Horn, Victor Gould, Sam Anning, Mark Ferguson and Lauren Henderson.
